Awful HEAT!

I will never understand 2 things about people and weather:
1. Why anyone wants to live in Florida
2. Why people build their lovely 2-story homes ON the sand at the beaches

For all of this month, the temperatures IN THE SHADE, mind you, will reach 98 or so, with heat indices reaching 105-110. In the shade. In the direct sun, temperatures can and do go as high as 120 degrees, which is very dangerous heat and humidity Florida is a tropical climate. Humidity, sweat, body odors from the sweat, are all part of summer here.

Night time isn’t much better, with lows in the mid-seventies. Small breezes, around 5 to 10 mph for the next few days.

Of course, this means the oceans are also heating up, which fuels hurricanes. Those horrible monsters that kill people, destroy homes on the beaches and inland, cause deadly flooding, and spawn tornadoes.

We also have a plethora of insects and dangerous animals: alligators, sharks, snakes, roaches, mosquitoes, mosquitoes, and gnats, mosquitoes and chiggers, wasps, mole crickets, maggots, fire ants, spiders, black widow and brown recluses, remember, flies, and jellyfish.

Why do people move to Florida? Do you enjoy sweating and being in a volatile climate? I just don’t get it. Why do people build houses at the beach, the Atlantic ocean beaches, and then get upset when their yards wash away, or the storms beat down their houses? Makes no sense to me.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Working with colors, clay, pen and paper, whatever, helps relieve stress in a way that is unique.

Self-discovery. At its most successful, art therapy triggers an emotional catharsis.
Personal fulfillment. The creation of a tangible reward can build confidence and nurture feelings of self-worth. Personal fulfillment comes from both the creative and the analytical components of the artistic process.
Empowerment. Art therapy can help people visually express emotions and fears that they cannot express through conventional means, and can give them some sense of control over these feelings.
Relaxation and stress relief. Chronic stress can be harmful to both mind and body. Stress can weaken and damage the immune system, can cause insomnia and depression , and can trigger circulatory problems (like high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats). When used alone or in combination with other relaxation techniques such as guided imagery , art therapy can effectively relieve stress.

Symptom relief and physical rehabilitation. Art therapy can also help patients cope with pain . This therapy can promote physiological healing when patients identify and work through anger, resentment, and other emotional stressors. It is often prescribed to accompany pain control therapy for chronically and terminally ill patients.

Father’s Day is Coming Up

Spend time with your dad this weekend. If he’s in another town, call him and chat, or skype. Send him a gift. Talk to him. You’ll be glad you did.

If you aren’t getting along with your dad, mend the rift. Get over it, and if you need help to get over it, ask Jesus to give you what you need. Pray for your dad, too. Read the bible to him, if you can.

Just spend time with him.

New Postage Stamps! Beautiful!

Look at these new USPS postage stamps!

Psalms 8:3 – When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Psalms 19:1 – (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Amos 5:8-9 – [Seek him] that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD [is] his name:

Fire and Rescue Community Exhibit and Demonstration

Hubby and I had an interesting tour of our local Fire and Rescue Department’s rescue and communications equipment Saturday! I learned that the firemen do SO MUCH MORE than put out dangerous fires! They are Emergency Medical Technicians, first responders, electricians, computer techs, inspectors, and even psychologists! Here in hot, humid Florida, their job, I believe, can be extremely stressful, because of the heavy protective suits, hats, and gloves they must wear in order to stay safe while fighting fires in 100 degree heat!
The firemen were so courteous, very friendly, and had answers to all my questions. I learned a great deal, and came away from the tour highly impressed and full of a greater respect for the men and women who save our lives, homes, and families.
Posted below are photos I took of several things we saw during our educational visit.
